I kicked off the new year by announcing that 2017 is to be the year of sowing at Island Christian Church. Just to be clear—“sowing” is the process of scattering seed over land, earth, etc., for the purpose of growth. Not only does this process require the seed, but fertile soil as well. In spiritual terms, as Jesus explained in His “Parable of the Soils,” the seed is the Word of God and the soil is the condition of the heart.
You can read the full account in Mark 10:1-20— and listen to my sermon from January 22
As an action point to my message, I offered several gospel tracts to the congregation, for them to take to do some of their own “sowing” to family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and the like— and I am delighted to say, the supply didn’t last! I had to reorder for the following Sunday. Awesome! Now let’s get the seed into the soil!
There are many ways to sow the Word in people’s lives and hearts. Certainly by handing them a tract on the New Birth— that they could receive it if they open their hearts to God and His Word – is a great place to start. Also, by your actions, which, as the saying goes, speak louder than words. Demonstrating what a life changed for and by Christ looks like up-close and personal is very powerful. However, it is the Word of God— the spoken or written Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ that will change a life— and, as Jesus says, produce fruit “thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold” (Mark 4:8).
I encourage you to look for opportunity to do that. If you make that your heart’s desire— to speak a word and invest in someone, God will certainly make a way and enable you to do so for His glory! The apostle Peter calls us Christians a “chosen race, a royal priesthood a people for his own possession…” then he goes on to say, “that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” It is our privilege and our Christian duty to proclaim His truth to a needy world. Bless you as you purpose to make that calling sure in your lives!
I look forward to continuing the year with these vital messages.
God’s Grace to you,
