Back To Church Sunday

Back To Church Sunday at ICC— September 9, 2018

So what do we mean by back to church? Well, a few things. Are we suggesting that there are people who used to go regularly but don’t any longer? Yes, certainly. Are we also suggesting that there are people who come for the main holidays and no more than a few times a year? Yes. Are we addressing some in our community where church was never a thing, to begin with? Yes again. When we say “Back To Church Sunday,” it takes into account each of these scenarios, not to mention those who may be regular attendees during most of the year, but with school being out and vacations during summer months, tend to lay low. So in that case, people go back to school and back to church—along with normal work routines.

The expectation is that people see the vital importance of being a regular part of a church.

During a recent Gallup telephone survey of a random sampling of about 1,000 Americans nationwide, interviewers ask respondents questions such as, “In the last seven days, did you attend a church service, excluding weddings and funerals?” to determine their church-going habits. The number they found was about 40 percent of Americans are regular church attendees— however, it doesn’t necessarily mean 40 percent are in church on any given Sunday. In fact, an alarming trend is that, in many church-goers minds, if they make it to church two or three times a month, that’s a win!

From an Outreach magazine article by Matt Brown, here’s the biblical pattern for attending church: “Every Christian should gather together to hear the Scriptures and worship Jesus with other believers weekly (Acts 2:42; 20:7, 20; Romans 16:5; 1 Corinthians 16:2,19; Colossians 3:16; 4:15; James 2:2; Ps. 37:17; 84:4; 92:13).”

That said, it is the responsibility of churches to make sure everyone entering its doors feel welcome, and to be given an opportunity to connect with God and His people. There is no magic formula. Simply provide an environment to proclaim God’s Word, live under its authority and love one another. To know that you belong to the family of God! That is the mission of Island Christian Church— in fact, we announce it every Sunday:

To glorify the Lord, our Light and salvation (Ps 27:1)

To walk in the Light of fellowship with one another (1 John 1:7)

To shine His Light in the World (Matt 5: 16)

We are so looking forward to seeing you on Sunday. As Pastor Mike is fond of saying, the Lord’s people in the Lord’s house on the Lord’s day!

Pastor Joe Garofalo
