Encourage One Another

1 Thessalonians 5:11– Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Sometimes I find that it is the little things in my life that can make a big difference. I guess what I am saying then is that the little things at times are really not so little. I have an example. In the midst of the craziness that is going on all around us with this terrible virus, we as Pastors here at Island Christian Church were tasked to start making daily phone calls to people in our congregation. The calls could be to members, one time visitors, attendees of our Wednesday night groups and classes, etc. And so for me, the calls began.

Sometimes I got through to who I was calling and sometimes I did not but I stayed with it. And unexpectantly but surely a change started to take place in me. I thought in terms of blessing those and being a help to those I called and this certainly took place. But as the calls increased in number I began to sense an inner change in my heart and mind. The blessings were coming my way, back in my direction, not just out to those I connected with. I heard words of caring people who asked how I was doing. I heard expressions of gratitude and joy conveyed to me. God was using this simple almost antiquated form of communication to keep His ministry going. It was so wonderful. And it expanded.

People in my support groups were asking for contact information so they could reach out to others. This was becoming a classic example of the snowball effect. I have had real heart to heart conversations with people in our church family who have needed to share. And beyond that, people out in our community who have had only a passing interaction with our church were asking me for prayer and expressing emotions of gratitude and joy because they received a phone call. True caring was taking place and it was and continues to flow in both directions as well as in a vertical direction to our Lord.

God was using these calls to get me out of myself, to get me away from being self-absorbed and overwhelmed by the crisis. I became more focused on the Lord and those around me. I thank the Lord for the excitement of these calls that I continue to make every day.

I know we are trying to reach everybody and that it is possible that some people may get missed but I encourage you to make some calls and allow God to bless you and those you reach out to.  I am truly blessed to be a part of our church family and I thank our Lord that we are able to connect with one another. It may be long-distance but The Lord is keeping our church family together.

Thank you all.
Blessings to my brothers and sisters in Christ.
