This month at our Northport location, the topic is: Essentials. Each Sunday our understanding of the essentials of our faith will be refreshed and deepened as we examine what God’s word says. The topics: Love God (September 10th), Love Others (September 17), Reach the World (September 24th).
Last month Pastor Joe and I had the opportunity to attend a conference called Vertical Church, in the Chicago area. The purpose can be summarized in this statement from the Conference Notes: “Let God Himself be the main attraction of the church again, and let us be tireless in our insistence that church is for God, about God, through God, and to the glory of His great Son.”
You might say, “Of course the church is about God! Who else or what else would it be about?” It can be about having the edgiest worship, the most entertaining speakers, the greatest coffee bar. It can become about social concerns, my favorite causes, etc.
Now, I love our worship teams, I think our pastoral team is entertaining as they proclaim the word of God, and I really like coffee! There is no doubt that Christians who are on fire for God will deeply and profoundly influence society and advance worthy causes. But all of that is birthed in a transforming relationship with a God who is both awesome in power and full of love and grace for His children. As Pastor John Piper famously said, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.”
If I have drifted from what is essential, if you have, our great God invites us to re-center on Him. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. James 4:8
