This verse from Habakkuk 1:5 came to mind as I prepared to write this…
Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.
We are more than halfway through 2020 and if you are counting, there are only 149 days until Christmas, I’m just saying! Never in a million years would we on January 1st have imagined what has unfolded in our nation during the first half of 2020 – we would not have believed it if we were told! I don’t know about you, but I feel it’s getting crazier by the day. Just a few days ago, it was reported in multiple news outlets that the pentagon has in its possession “off-world vehicles not made on this Earth!” Maybe it’s just fake news, but sure why not…if ever there was a year!
Behind all these events and happenings is a Sovereign God who remains in control. I believe that God is using this season to wake us up as the church of Jesus Christ.
Listen carefully to what it says in Hebrews 12, Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens. This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken—that is, things that have been made—in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, 29 for our God is a consuming fire.
Like everyone else, I’m hoping for better and brighter days, but when those days come again and I believe they will, will God become just an afterthought? Will our hunger for God increase or diminish? Will we have as much passion to share the Gospel with those who are lost as much as we are passionate to share our opinions on social media?
Let’s be honest, we sometimes love and want the blessings of God more than God Himself! In times of pain and difficulty, we are forced to think about the bigger spiritual picture and that’s when we are ready to reach out to the Lord.
Look at God’s warning to the Israelite’s right before he brought them out of captivity…
Deuteronomy 6:10-12 (NLT)
10 “The Lord your God will soon bring you into the land he swore to give you when he made a vow to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is a land with large, prosperous cities that you did not build. 11 The houses will be richly stocked with goods you did not produce. You will draw water from cisterns you did not dig, and you will eat from vineyards and olive trees you did not plant. When you have eaten your fill in this land, 12 be careful not to forget the Lord, who rescued you from slavery in the land of
I think this is an important warning for us as well. As I heard someone recently say, “May I never forget. On my best day, I still need God as desperately as I did on my worst day!”
Bottom line, whether we are in a pandemic or not, our focus & goal as Christians remains the same – to follow Jesus!
So Whatever happens…
- It’s time to serve the Lord!
- It’s time to get serious about following Jesus!
- It’s time to stop putting important things off!
- It’s time to own your faith outside of the church building!
- It’s time to ask God for Holy Spirit boldness as we look to share the Gospel and have spiritual conversations with friends and family!
The shaking has begun but when our foundation is Christ the solid rock we do not have to be shaken! Only God knows what is in store for us during these next 5 months but here is where my confidence lies: the same God who faithfully brought us to this point will be faithful to us in this next season as well!
Keep shining till we meet again Church!
