God as Hoarder- Daily Devotional by Pastor Mike O’Connor

God thinks big.

 As Louis Giglio has said, “As a habitation for humankind, the universe is way too big.  But as a creation that brings glory to its creator, it’s just the right size.”

Just to compare:   Our solar system is about 9 billion kilometers across.  If you make the solar system the size of a quarter, the Milky Way is the size of the entire North American continent!  And the Milky Way galaxy is just one of hundreds of billions of galaxies in the known universe.

God thinks big.  At the same time, he shows personal care and concern for each of his children.  This is especially true in our times of suffering. David wrote Psalm 56.  In its introduction:  “…of David, when the Philistines seized him in Gath.”  He testifies to his experience with his Lord:

You have kept count of my tossings;

put my tears in your bottle.

Are they not in your book?   (Psalm 56:8)

Note all the ways Scripture tells us of God’s personal concern-
  • Our tossings–counted
  • Our tears–bottled
  • Our griefs–recorded in his book

So while his creation is vast beyond our comprehension, God’s care is intimate and personal beyond our understanding.  The world may not notice our sufferings or it may choose to disregard them.  But our hoarder God counts them and records them.  He bottles our tears.

Let’s press on on this Psalm to see how King David is responding to hard times in a healthy way-

1. He acknowledges his tossings, his tears.

2. At the same time, he reminds himself of what he knows (verses 9b-11)

This I know, that God is for me.

In God, whose word I praise,

in the Lord, whose word I praise,

in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.

What can man do to me?

3. He decides to follow through on the promises he has made to God (12-13).  When times are confusing, and the will of God seems unclear, here is a place to start:  Fulfill your promises to God!  The will of God is more than these, but it is certainly not less than these.

I must perform my vows to you, O God;

I will render thank offerings to you.

For you have delivered my soul from death,

yes, my feet from falling,

that I may walk before God

in the light of life.   Psalm 56:10-13

God thinks big.  But He ministers to his children individually.  So if this morning you are waking up after a night of tossings–He counted.  Even a time of tears–already bottled.  The God you are praying to today joins you in your sorrow, but does not leave you there.  Let’s affirm with King David:

This I know, that God is for me.

In God, whose word I praise,

in the Lord, whose word I praise,

in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.

What can man do to me?

May God’s grace and peace be multiplied to you,

Pastor Mike
