He is Worthy!

“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
Revelation 4:11

It’s not a stretch to say that our nation and world have been rocked— the likes of which few have seen before. As Christians, we may be asking where God is in all this? I know that question has occasionally crossed my mind. But then, it occurs to me that God is in every aspect of our world, after all, the world is His.

In Revelation 4, the apostle John is describing his invitation from the Lord Jesus to look through a door in heaven to see events that were yet to come. In 4:11 the four living creatures were beside the throne, worshipping God, who is deserving of all glory, honor, and power because He is sovereign. He rules the universe as its Creator. In fact, the universe was created by the Word of God (Hebrews 11:3). He spoke everything into creation! Our verse tells us that He created all things by His will. Creation was not by accident. God is not surprised by the events of human history— nor is He overwhelmed by circumstances.

This should have a great effect on our prayer lives. While it’s good (and biblical) to present our requests to God, let us first start with the acknowledgment of His worthiness to receive glory and honor and power. As King David exclaimed in Psalm 27:4, “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.” As David was a man who made many requests of the Lord— even to spare his very life, his heart’s desire was to be in the presence of almighty God. While we are despairing over circumstances in these troubled times, along with our own personal strife, God is calling us to seek His presence first and foremost, for He is worthy of our constant praise!

Let us, His most cherished possession, humbly submit to our Maker!

PS—
With each new year, I ask the Lord for a word which helps put my focus in the right place. For 2021 my word is “worthy” (no surprise there)! I encourage you to ask God for a word to help sustain and prioritize your year. Once you get it, share it with others!
