Current weather conditions at the SouthPole:
Feels Like: -104 °F
Forecast: -40 / -43 °F
Wind: 18 mph ↑ from North
As the days grow longer here in the Northern Hemisphere, the exact opposite is happening in the Southern Hemisphere. Right now, at the South Pole, they are getting just about one hour of sunlight every day. “They” would be the Emperor Penguins who live there. These noble creatures endure these brutal climatic conditions by huddling together. They form a large circle, and if we could watch time-lapse photography, we would see that those who are enduring the harshest of the cold on the outside of the circle make their way toward the center. At the same time, those in the center move and take their turn on the outside facing the cold.
Am I sharing this to discourage us from complaining about the weather on Long Island? No, rather that we would find ways to “huddle” during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the very beginning, God said: “It is not good that the man should be alone…” Genesis 2:18.
It was when Jesus was alone in the wilderness that he endured the greatest temptation from the devil. (Matthew 4, Luke 4)
We have the same need, for the writer of Hebrews says: But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Hebrews 3:13
And later in that same book: And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Hebrews 10:24-25
So in this time of government-enforced isolation, we will need to be creative. Technology does not replace geography. It does provide ways to connect with others until we can do so more personally. Do not wait for others! Take the initiative to make first contact.
The verses above say that the need is exhortation and encouragement.
As we connect, we may find a brother or sister in the Lord who has been facing the “cold” of this pandemic for a very long time alone and who needs to be brought into the warmth of fellowship with people who love Jesus and care about others.
Our LIFE Groups are meeting. Connecting with a group starts HERE.
All grace to you,
