If He Cares For Me, How Come…?

…casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.  1 Peter 5:7

In yesterday’s email I wrote:
The best part of the verse:  …because he cares for you.  This verse Is not just a psychological exercise where we feel better as we visualize ourselves casting off problems.  This is the actual transfer of our anxieties to the One who is powerful enough to handle any anxiety of ours, and who cares for us!

In light of what we are going through, you may have some questions about that.  If He cares for me, how come…?  How come I have this awful virus?  How come someone I love is struggling with this, and I am so helpless to do anything about it?  How come I lost my job?  How come my business has collapsed?  How come I have to go to work in such a tense place and expose myself to possible contagion?

I do not presume to have all the answers to these questions.  But I know we need to answer them in light of what we know is true about God.

Christian counselor and writer David Powlison warns us about being too glib when we address the concerns of others who are experiencing trials:

…we turn it into a formula: “If you just believe (blank). If you just do (blank). If you just remember (blank).” No important truth ever contains the word “just” in the punch line.

The Apostle Paul tells us in his first epistle to the Corinthians: …we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.  (1 Corinthians 13:12)

So we may need to live for a while with the “How comes?”  But let us live in light of this truth: ...but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Romans 5:8. His care for us is not just spoken but demonstrated.  And it was truly costly to him.  Let’s look at our circumstances through the prism of God’s demonstrated love rather than looking at God’s love through the prism of our current circumstances.

Thank you for praying for your pastors and the church.  We are blessed to minister to you in Jesus’ name during this global crisis.  For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you?  For you are our glory and joy.  1 Thessalonians 2:19-20
