Keeping the Holy in Holy Week

resurrection eggs

Holidays can so easily become about anything and everything else- except what they’re truly about. On Memorial Day- BBQs and parades take the focus from our fallen heroes. At Christmastime- Santa gets the spotlight and the miracle of Emmanuel- God with us, gets sidelined. And right around the corner is Easter, when unhealthy amounts of candy delivered by a bunny do it’s best to steal the thunder away from the greatest act of love ever shown. Have you ever considered how easily we settle for the mundane when what is being offered us is so glorious?

The best way to keep the secular from sucking the joy out of the holy is to be purposed about keeping the true significance of the day front and center- and teaching it to your children. Valuable traditions can take root in their heart in ways that will last with them forever- into their own family celebrations as adults.

One way our family has done this at Easter time is with a meaningful, interactive activity called Resurrection Eggs. You can find these pre-made kits to purchase or you can make a set yourself. Either way, they’re a wonderful tool to help you dive into the events of Holy Week in a way that will help bring it alive for kids and grown-ups alike. For those of us who are visual/tactile learners, Resurrection Eggs provides a way for you to read God’s Word while opening an egg that contains a small token which represents the verse of Scripture for that day. You can take it a day at a time, over 12 days or you can go thru them all at once, experiencing the final days of Jesus’ life as you go.

For our family, Resurrection Eggs is a way for us to connect with God and with each other at dinner time. Each night leading up to Easter Sunday we gather around the table to read God’s Word aloud and discover what awaits in each egg. Resurrection Eggs can serve your family at every age and stage. When my kids were very young they would listen as best they could while they fidgeted with excitement over the anticipation of opening the egg and revealing it’s special contents. As my children got older, their participation increased. Being able to read the verses themselves and have a discussion together about what it means for us today has helped to deepen their understanding and reminds us all that the awesome significance of Easter is so much more than bunnies and candy and eggs. Our salvation, our faith, our everything hinges on the events of that Holy Week so long ago- when Jesus paid it all so that we could be free.

In the midst of Holy Week and as we prepare for Sunday’s celebration- let us not neglect to hallow God’s name. He is, after all, the reason we celebrate! This is just one simple example of how your family can keep meaning and joy at the forefront of your holiday. Whatever you do to honor God this Easter, may the traditions you incorporate into your celebration draw you nearer to the heart of your Savior.
