Message: “All Authority”

Rev. Joseph Garofalo - August 31, 2014

All Authority

Scripture—Matthew 7:21-28 [21] “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. [22] On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ [23] And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ [24] “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. [25] And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. [26] And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. [27] And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” [28] And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, [29] for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes. Main Idea—Christ Is Our Authority, He Gives That Authority to Us to Accomplish His Will What are sources of authority? Science, intellect, power, possessions, pleasure, etc.! For the Christian—all authority ultimately comes from Jesus Christ. Unlike the prophets who referenced God as their authority, Jesus spoke on His own authority. Authority—to power to judge and adjudicate questions and disputes. Christ the Authority—He is creator, He always existed. The central part of Jesus life and teaching is the revelation of His identity and authority. True believers have a conformity between their professions of faith and their walk of faith. Less than this is not saving faith. We are not saved by our works, but good works are the test of our saving faith. Storms do not avoid the house of the wise or the house of the foolish. Both experience storms; the wise, on the rock (Christ), endure. Christ Under Authority The Son of God submits to the Father even though they are co-equal persons of the Trinity. see John 6:38; Philippians 2 What Christ does with His Authority—He Gives It Away see Matthew 28. He claims all authority and then gives it to us, His followers, for the purpose of carrying out His commission. Application— If you are a believer, your source of authority is now Christ. What was the primary source before that? (Intellect, Feelings, Science, Education, Pleasure, Power, etc.) Can you claim, like Jesus, that you are under authority? (note that being under authority does not imply inferiority) Can I say that I consciously rely on and expect God to empower me as I walk through life as His ambassador? If not, what can help me to walk in the authority that God has given?
