Salt and Light

Being Salt and Light–Don’t Go All Dark and Tasteless on Jesus Scripture–Matthew 5:13-16 [13] “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. [14] “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. [15] Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. [16] In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Main Idea–Our Presence in the World is a Beneficial One as We Represent the Jesus in Us Salt and Light are beneficial–essential really. Essentials: Purity–Salt needs to be free of impurities if it is to be useful. Prominence–Light that is hidden is no good–when Jesus lights a lamp he gives it a place of prominence. Penetration–Salt is no good in the shaker–it has to be applied. Light is no good if hidden under a basket–it needs to be uncovered. “You” in verse 13 and in verse 14 is emphatic–”You and you only.” Jesus was speaking to very ordinary people then and now, and giving us the privilege and responsibility of being salt and light. Application– ● What is God showing you through this message? ● Of the three essentials–purity, prominence, and penetration–which is most necessary for you to develop or display? How are you doing that?
