Lessons from Noah, the Flood and the Ark
February 2, 2014 Message Title: Lessons from Noah, the Ark and the Flood Part 5 of The Scarlet Thread series Pastor Ayars Scripture— Genesis 6:5-14 The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the LORD said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God. And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight, and the earth was filled with violence. And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. Main Idea—Scripture, Correctly Understood, Shows the Historicity of the Ark and Flood Six New Testament passages that affirm the historicity of Noah, the Ark and the Flood: Matthew 24:3-39, Luke 17:26-27, Hebrews 11:7, I Peter 3:20, II Peter, 2:5-7, and II Peter 3:5-7 The Bible teaches that things follow an orderly cycle, the question is when did this happen? Even Bible uniformitarianism would say that the Ark and the Flood would be impossible apart from God’s intervention. God did intervene—see II Peter 3; scoffers deliberately overlook this. Six Evidences— Design of ark showed a sophistication of design and materials beyond development of that time. It was mammoth, large enough to carry 150,000 sheep. All animals would take only 60% of ark, leaving great space for food to be stored. Gathering and Care of Animals—God supernaturally led pairs of them to migrate to the ark. Probable that God placed them in a state of hibernation. & 4. The uplift of oceanic waters from beneath & Release of Waters from Above: The waters from below and above were released as the earth was rent apart. 5 & 6—see next week Application Time— What parts of this message were most important to you in increasing your faith in God and your confidence in the Scriptural accounts? What “Myths” were dispelled by this examination? What does this mean for our future? II Peter 3– But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! (2 Peter 3:10-12 ESV)
