It’s no secret that marriages today are in trouble. According to the latest statistics from the CDC, over 90 couples are choosing to call it quits every hour resulting in over 800,000 families in America thrown into a tailspin annually. With a desire to build strong marriages, Island Christian Church is pleased to announce the launch of “Threefold Cord”, a ministry dedicated to help build strong marriages, directed by Eddie and Florrie Martell.
“We derived our name from the Old Testament scripture found in Ecclesiastics 4:12, ‘a cord of three strands is not easily broken’,” states Eddie. “Each cord in the strand is representative of God’s successful design for marriage: the husband, the wife, and the Lord Himself. Without these elements working in concert with each other, it becomes increasingly difficult for the couple to fulfill their long-term commitment.” Traditionally, support for marriages came into play when conflict was already a daily component of the relationship. Couples were left on their own to work it out for themselves or, if they were fortunate enough, go to counseling. Today, there are multiple tools available to help ensure longevity and long-term satisfaction of a God-centered marriage relationship. “If we can start working with couples before the marriage takes place they’re more apt to avoid the rude awakening that awaits newlyweds after they’ve had their first big blowup,” says Florrie. “We all know that day is going to come. If we can address the conflict by being prepared in advance, the overall outcome will be positioned for growth and unity, not isolation and offense.”
Threefold Cord, the marriage strengthening ministry at Island Christian Church, will utilize a wide array of venues to create a welcoming environment for everyone. There will be workshops and DVD-driven curriculums for both small group and individual settings. And, of course, Biblically-based marriage counseling will be offered as well. Eddie and Florrie have the experience of over 25 years of marriage together and an additional two decades preparing engaged couples for marriage.
