Will you not revive us again,
that your people may rejoice in you?
Some say that we should not pray for revival; God will send it as he sovereignly decrees. Who can argue that our great God can do what he wills?
But what if God wants revival and sends the blessing of it on those who want it as he does? If this is true, we should find Scripture that encourages us to pray for God’s outpouring on his people. We have found many. They follow. But first, let’s define revival.
What is revival? Pastor and author John Piper says, “revival in its most biblical sense has meant a sovereign work of God in which a whole region of many churches, many Christians have been lifted out of spiritual indifference and worldliness into conviction of sin, earnest desires for more of Christ and his word, boldness in witness, purity of life, [with] lots of conversions, joyful worship, [and] renewed commitment to missions.”
Revival is when God is the joyful center of all of life and everything else takes its proper place under his lordship.
We are praying that God will revive Long Island. Our island may seem too indifferent, even hostile to the things of God. But God’s word says, Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water. (Psalm 114:7-8 ESV)
Let’s look at Scriptures that encourage us to pray for revival!
