Singing in Prison

flowers fenceAs far as I’m concerned, the world as we know it has been taken captive. We have been mandated to our own homes and the isolation is only getting tougher for some. If we are not careful our own homes can turn into prisons. Sometimes prison walls aren’t just physical ones, but sometimes mental and spiritual. I believe that God has given us a great example of how we can keep our burdens light. In the book of Acts, Paul and Silas were stripped and severely beaten, and thrown in prison with their feet in stocks. In a dark inner cell, they knew that the most powerful thing they could do was to … Sing.

Acts: 23-26
“After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose.”

Paul knew that singing in the midst of trials wasn’t just a “feel good” exercise but it was and is a spiritual discipline. Paul learned that God moves in the presence of true worship and prayer. His experiences in prison shaped his faith and understanding of the freedom we all can experience in Christ. He would later write using language like “being a prisoner of Jesus Christ”, and how “Christ sets us free.”

Another example of singing comes from Jesus himself. When he was about to leave his disciples for the last time, Jesus shared that final supper with them and taught them the last of what he could- with his words. Then together they sang a hymn. Sometimes the act of singing is the most profound thing we can do when we have no other words.

I have heard complaints at times about the selections of music we sing in worship but thankfully the song choice is not what Christian singing is about. It’s about what is needed in the soul. It’s about connecting with God. It’s not about the expectations of the entertainment world and not about the quality of the performance. God looks at the sincerity of the heart and provides the pathway for a needy soul to connect with its creator.

Revelation 5:13
Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!”

Let’s connect with our Creator. There’s a popular worship song that I think is a good reminder that he is present with us even now and that he is making a way even in our dark times. Please take a moment to sing to the Lord:

Way Maker

You are here
Moving in our midst
I worship you
I worship you

You are here
Working in this place
I worship you
I worship you
You are here

Way maker
Miracle worker
Promise keeper
Light in the darkness
My God
That is who you are
