Surrounded By God

I will be to you a wall of fire all around, declares the Lord, and I will be the glory in your midst.  Zechariah 2:5

It seemed like overnight, we were made ultra-aware that we are surrounded by many strains of bacteria and viruses. As we viewed the constant stream of news reports about the spread of the coronavirus, many also felt surrounded by the uncertainties they face and concerns for their future. I want to encourage you today that God’s truths are the framework to which we assess our safety and peace because we are surrounded by Him. God is the source of life itself. Are you focusing on that relationship and drawing strength from Him?

If you feel like the enemy has you surrounded, the Bible tells us our battle is not against flesh and blood. If we could see what the spiritual battle really looked like, we would no longer be afraid. This is exactly what happened for Elisha and the very physical threat of the Syrian army. Physically, the enemy was stronger. But spiritually, their army was much greater.

Elisha prayed “O Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” And the Lord opened the servant’s eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. – 2 Kings 6:17

What if we saw our battles the way that God sees them? We hope and pray that God will help us, not realizing He has already equipped us for battle.

God surrounds you with:

1. Promises: In The Word

When we rely on God’s Word we believe His testimony above anyone else. God’s promises fill us with hope, strength, and guidance in difficult times.

  • Reading God’s Word teaches us to trust in the sovereignty of God and the goodness of God. We can know that nothing happens outside of His will.

In Practice: Memorize key scriptures of encouragement. You can even speak your name as the personal pronoun to personalize the scripture. Such as 1 Corinthians 13:4: (Your Name) is patient, (Your Name) is kind …

2. Peace: Through Prayer

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

  • There is no real and lasting peace outside of knowing God. When we encounter troubles, tests, and trials, we should rely on the peace of God. This holds us steady through storms of life.

In Practice: Be aware of your troubled spirit and commit to taking moments each day to pray.

3. Power: Walking in the Spirit

That according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, (are) being rooted and grounded in love.  Ephesians 3:16-17

  • We cannot live out the Christian walk without the Holy Spirit. He gives us the power to do that which feels unnatural to us and live according to the truth.

In Practice: Ask the Lord to lead you and then obey His direction.

Remember, you are surrounded by the promises, peace, and power of God. It is important to focus on maintaining a right relationship with God through these difficult times. Be encouraged that He surrounds you right now and hears you when you call.
