Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. Romans 13:8
Did you ever pay off something and feel an immense relief? You see “Lien Satisfied” on the title of your car. You burn the mortgage to your house. Done. No more payments. It can be deeply satisfying.
The plain truth of Scripture is that we can never say that we are done loving. We can look on it as our continuing obligation–which it is. Another way to look at it: It is our way of truly following in the steps of our Savior. As Pastor Joe mentioned in his email last week, John 13 begins this way: “…having loved his own who were in the world, he [Jesus] loved them to the end.” To the uttermost. He never stopped.
So when we are fatigued at extending ourselves in love to others, remember our calling to follow our Savior–the One who loved us to the end. He will give us what we need when our resources are low. When we receive the love of the Lord–really receive it–it overflows to those around us.
All grace to you,
