Three Great, Faith-Building Books for Young Readers

November is Young Reader’s month! Reading is a valuable tool for kids of all ages: it provides entertainment, valuable life lessons, and an intellectual exercise, all in one! Most importantly though, it is a useful tool for seeking God and aiding young readers on their faith journey.

Here are 3 great options to help your child study God’s truth through reading this November:

pilgrims progress1. “Pilgrim’s Progress”, John Bunyan, adapted by James H. Thomas-

This classic, originally written by John Bunyan, is an allegorical tale of the Christian journey. It follows a young Christian, appropriately named Christian, as he leaves his home in the City of Destruction and begins his journey to salvation in the Celestial City. Christian’s adventure is full of encounters with interesting people, such as Faithful, Hopeful, and Ignorance. Christian eventually reaches his home in Celestial City, but not without learning several hard-earned and important lessons along the way. Refreshed and rewritten in modern English, it is easy for young readers to understand, and also thought-provoking and compelling. This is a tale that young Christians of all ages will be able to relate to and find themselves in, both supporting and challenging them in their own faith journey. This book is available in our bookstore, at ICC Northport!

2. “Jesus Calling”, Sarah Young-

Jesus Calling contains 365 devotionals, all written as though Jesus was speaking directly to a child’s heart. Originally a devotional for adults, Sarah Young has created a new version geared towards children. There is no book more important or valuable to young readers than the Bible, and “Jesus Calling” provides scriptural references to help kids dive into God’s Word. Complete with messages phrased as though directly from Jesus and based on scripture, “Jesus Calling” is helpful, comforting, and spiritually stimulating for young readers. This book is also available at our bookstore.

3. “The Answers Book For Kids”, Ken Ham-

Today, especially for kids in public schools, science and faith seem to be at odds. It is disorienting for children to get one creation narrative in church, and another in the classroom. Written for ages about 6-12, Answers In Genesis has created this 8 volume series to answer the difficult questions children are prematurely confronted with nowadays. They are educational and entertaining, condensing difficult questions like “Where does sin come from,” and, “Why does God let the bad guys win sometimes?” into digestible biblical-based answers. This book arms kids with a defense of their faith early on, prepares them for how to navigate conflicting worldviews, keeps them firmly grounded in the Bible, and also aids them on their faith journey as they seek answers to their own doubts and questions. “The Answers Books For Kids” is an outlet for curiosity, a useful educational tool, and a great starting point to discussions on important topics with your child.

ICC has a vibrant Children’s ministry on Sunday mornings and other special events. We invite you to join us and see for yourself.
