Walking the Tightrope-Daily Devotional by Pastor Josh

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

On the morning of June 30, 1859, the greatest tightrope walker in the world, The Great Blondin became the first man to walk a tightrope across the raging Niagara Falls. Being the showman that he was, he would ask the crowds to cheer before his stunt if they had faith in him to be successful. After seeing how seemingly easy it all was for him, the crowds unanimously agreed to believe in him. Blondin astonishingly was able to walk backward over the cable toward Canada yet before he returned to the U.S. side he began preparing a wheelbarrow to take back over with him. He shouted a question for the crowd,“Which one of you will ride in my wheelbarrow?” The crowd stood frozen, silent, and no one responded to the challenge. They all witnessed his abilities and had faith in him but they could not actually put their trust in him.

It makes me think about what I am putting my trust in right now. It feels like we are walking a tightrope in our nation. Some are putting their hope in social campaigns, politics, or governments to change the world. If placed into the story, we would not be the tightrope walker but rather the trusting person in the wheelbarrow.

The most important decision right now is to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. This world is temporary but Jesus Christ is everlasting. We do not lean on our own understanding but operate BY FAITH when our greatest challenges arise. In Hebrew 11, it explains that it was “by faith” that Noah built the ark which saved his family. It was “by faith” that Moses parted the Red Sea to save his people. In this way, Christians are to demonstrate their faith in a better country, a heavenly one.

Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.   Hebrews 11:16
It is good to long for better and not lose hope. Faith is defined as believing despite the evidence you see. It is not just that things CAN get better, but that they WILL, with effort, get better. Our job is to keep the faith and live as ambassadors of Christ because he is making his appeal through us.
Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.   2 Corinthians 5:19-21
Like the tightrope, narrow is the path of the Lord but wide is the pathway to destruction. If you are walking the tightrope, please make sure it leads to Jesus. Many times God’s path doesn’t line up with worldly agendas and may actually look more like a healthy tension because we are not meant to live in such extremes.
I’d like to encourage you to acknowledge him, let Him direct your pathway, and let your faith lead your actions.
