When My Heart Is Overwhelmed

My heart is sore pained within me, and the terrors of death are fallen upon me. Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me and horror hath overwhelmed me. And I said Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then I would fly away and be at rest. Lo then would I wander far off and remain in the wilderness. I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest. Psalm 55:4-8

David in this Psalm is responding to painful experiences that happened to Him. He was hurting and wanted a way out. And today in this year of 2020, life is coming at us from all different directions and at times can overwhelm and overpower us.

In light of what we are going through with the virus outbreak, I am sure we can identify with David’s desire to flee to that far away and peaceful place. I see this a lot in my Griefshare groups where people have lost their loved ones and are hurting so deeply and looking for a way around, through and past the pain.

For us today, we are experiencing a variety of emotions as we attempt to deal with what is happening to us. Fear, anger, anxiety, depression, are all emotions that we can experience.

God knew what David was going through over two thousand years ago and He knows what we are going through today. David’s feelings were normal in light of what was happening around and to him and our feelings and all we are experiencing in these sometimes dark days are normal and to be expected.

God understands. He knows us better than we know ourselves.

I do know however that what I wrestle with each day can and should be brought to the Lord. He knows exactly what is going on in my life and in yours. It’s okay to be struggling in this terrible crisis. We are human and God created us with emotions and feelings. But as believers, He also gave us the ability to go to Him.

It all comes down to connecting with God, to be willing to see that He has the answer and that He is the answer. It is often a process to work through those feelings that overwhelm us but it starts simply by closing our eyes and asking our Heavenly Father to help us.

May you be blessed as you go to Him this day.
