Domino Effect: When Compromise Comes First

Pastor Colby Rohde

May 25, 2025

This week, we looked at the tragic yet telling life of King Saul from 1 Samuel. Saul began with immense promise: chosen by God, anointed by the prophet Samuel, and celebrated by the people. But like a driver who blows past warning signs, Saul ignored divine instructions, took spiritual detours, and eventually ran a red light that cost him the throne. His downfall wasn’t instant—it was a slow drift through partial obedience, pride, fear of people, and the desire to control outcomes. In a moment of heartbreaking clarity, Saul admits: “I have acted like a fool.” The greatest fool, we learned, is the one who prepares for everything in this life—but neglects eternity. Yet, Saul’s story is also a mirror. For leaders, parents, and everyday people navigating pressure and responsibility, it reminds us to pay attention to God’s signs and voice. When we follow our own path instead of God’s direction, we risk spiritual ruin. But it doesn’t have to end that way. There’s grace in the detour. And in Jesus—the true King who obeyed fully, led humbly, and never strayed—we find the road back. Let’s take stock, slow down, and surrender our lives to the One who never misleads.
